I’m so not ready for this…
As we sat down for dinner last night, my 9 year old son starts snickering with his sister. Hubby inquired as to what was so funny. My 6 year old daughter proceeds to answer, “Conner’s talking about six trillion.” Conner immediately blurts out, “Sofie, that’s a bad word!” We asked him what he was talking about. His reply was like an atomic bomb going off.
“S-E-X”
Thankfully, hubby wasn’t as devastated or caught off guard like I was. He quickly said, “Conner, the number is S-I-X - and trust me, you don’t know what the other word means.” Conner’s reply was, “Oh, Dad, I do know.” Hubby answered back, “We’ll sit down and talk about it soon, son.”
Whoa, Nelly! I am not ready for my kids to start thinking and talking about this stuff! Especially when my little six year old is sitting there listening - and of course my 3 year old parrots back anything he hears his siblings say.
But upon some digging in my memory banks, I remembered that in 3rd grade a classmate of mine (a minister’s daughter - isn’t that the way it usually is) told me about the “birds and the bees”. Of course, she was not correct - she was in the neighborhood of being right - but she was still wrong enough to make it laughable.
I guess it’s about time for these types of things to pop up - but it doesn’t make it any easier for me to deal with.
I know that there are different schools of thought about how much info to share and when and how. I’m not sure how hubby and I will tackle this issue - but boy it sure is uncomfortable and a bit unsettling. But, I guess my babies are growing up…
